Maintaining Road Segments

A road segment is used to locate a specific section of a road as the site for a project's work or a portion of the project's work. A road segment can be described by a set of starting and ending latitude and longitude measurements.

A road segment can also be defined as a set of three starting and ending spatial coordinates (X, Y, Z) for use in GIS applications. Adding three-dimensional coordinates to a road segment record enables your agency to connect data much more efficiently. For example, an agency needs to know what highway projects fall within a newly-defined Threatened or Endangered Species habitat. If the road segment data is spatially enabled, this can take seconds to perform in a GIS program, but could take weeks to develop the project list if performed manually.

The Road Segments tab on the Project Summary contains an accordion list of all the road segments associated with the project. Each row represents one road segment. Each row includes a Delete button and displays values for the Road Name, Road Description, and Road Number fields.

To maintain a road segment record, expand the row to display all the available information. You can add and change information in these fields:

To add or change spatial coordinate information for the road segment, expand the Location section of the row. You can add or change information in these fields:

To delete a road segment, select Delete from the Actions menu on the road segment row. The system shades the row gray to indicate it is marked for deletion. To reverse the delete action, click the Undo button.

When you are finished, click the Save button to apply your changes. The system displays a message to confirm that your changes were saved in the database.

Adding Road Segments to the Project

To add a new road segment to the project, click the New button on the Road Segments tab. The system adds a new row at the bottom of the list of road segments. All fields in the new row are blank.

To create a road segment record, you must enter information in the Description field.

When you are finished adding information, click the Save button to save the new road segment in the database.
