Working with UIC Codes

Your agency analyzes item information on a regional and national basis and therefore needs to be able to identify and compare like items from different agencies. To make this analysis easier, all agencies use a universal item classification (UIC) scheme. The UIC scheme is made up of predefined values that cannot be changed by any agency.

The UIC Summary component allows you to associate each of your individual reference items to a UIC code, and thereby use the UIC scheme to facilitate regional data analysis.

Follow these steps to associate a reference item with a UIC code:

  1. Navigate to the Item Summary component for the item you want to associate: From the Reference Data component, click the Items link. Locate the item, and click the Item number.

  2. Click the UIC quick link.

The system takes you to the UIC Summary component.

  3. Click the Select UIC button.

The system displays a modal window for selecting a UIC code.

  4. In the modal window, locate the UIC code you want to associate with the reference item by typing criteria in the Quick Find search box or click Show first 10 to display all the UIC codes in the system.

The system lists all the codes that meet your search criteria.

  5. Click the row for the UIC code you want to select.

The system adds a check mark beside the code you select and shades the row. To cancel a selection, click the selected row again.

  6. Click the Associate UIC to Item button.

The system closes the modal window and takes you to the UIC Summary with the following fields automatically populated:

    Unit of Measure
    UIC Description
    High Level Code
    High Level Unit
    High Level Conversion
    Unit System
    Agency
    Low Level Code
    Low Level Unit
    Low Level Conversion

  7. Enter a conversion factor value in both the High Level Conversion and Low Level Conversion fields. If the unit of measure for the reference item matches the UIC unit, the conversion factor is 1.

  8. Click Save to save the new UIC item association in the database.
